1. Jaylen Brown is not a good fit for the Celtics
The Celtics have been looking at ways to improve their roster since they were eliminated from the playoffs last season. One of those ways was trading for Kevin Durant. However, the Celtics may have traded away their best asset if they acquire him.
Brown is a great player, but he’s not a perfect fit for the Celtics. He’s a small forward who thrives in the pick-and-roll game, but he doesn’t do much else. His defense isn’t great, his rebounding numbers aren’t great, and his shooting percentages don’t look great. The Celtics need someone who can create offense for themselves, and Brown simply doesn’t do that.
    He’s
a solid defender, but he’s not going to make any major improvements defensively. He’s a good rebounder, but he won’t get many rebounds for the Celtics. And while he’s a decent shooter, he’s not a consistent threat from outside.
In short, Brown is a nice piece, but he’s not the type of guy who makes everyone around him better. That’s what the Celtics need.
  2. The Celtics already have enough wing players
The Celtics already have three starting wings in Jayson Tatum, Gordon Hayward, and Al Horford. Adding another wing wouldn’t help them. Sure, they could use some depth, but adding a fourth starter would only hurt them.
They’re already overloaded with wings. If they add another one, they’ll have five starters instead of four. That means less playing time for guys like Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart, and Aron Baynes.
  3. The Celtics’ front office is focused on winning now
The Celtics are trying to win right now. They’ve got Kyrie Irving, Al Horford, and Gordon Hayward under contract for the foreseeable future. They want to keep these guys happy, and they know that they can’t afford to lose them.
Adding a free agent would mean losing out on draft picks. Draft picks are valuable assets, and the Celtics don’t want to give them up. They’d rather keep their current core together and hope that they can build something special over the next few years.
  4. There’s no guarantee that Durant would even sign with Boston
Durant has never played for the Celtics before, and he might not want to play for them now. He’s coming off a torn Achilles tendon, and he’s still recovering from it. He’s also coming off a year where he averaged 31 points per game.
    If
he wants to continue being elite, he needs to stay healthy. Playing for the Celtics would put him at risk of getting injured again.
