Sweely was drafted out of college by Seattle in the 2nd round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He played only 4 games in his rookie season before being cut. In 2008 he was re-signed to the Seahawks practice squad. In 2009, he signed a contract extension with the team. After playing sparingly in 2010, he was released from the team in 2011. He then signed with the Kansas City Chiefs where he played until 2012 before retiring.

J.R. Sweety played his entire career as a defensive tackle for the Seahawks. He played for them from 1996-2008. He is currently the director of player personnel for the team. He is considered one of the greatest players to ever wear a Seahawks jersey.
