NFL Hits Deshaun Watson With 11-Game Ban And $5M Fine After Sexual Misconduct The National Football League (NFL) announced on Wednesday that quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended without pay for the first 11 games of the 2021 season for violating its personal conduct policy. Watson was accused of sexually assaulting his former girlfriend, who he dated while at Clemson University. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the suspension comes with a $5 million fine. In a statement released on Wednesday, the league said Watson violated the personal conduct policy twice last year.It added that the violation included “engaging in a relationship that continued well beyond the college campus.” The
statement read: “We have been informed that the alleged incident took place in December 2016, and we were notified in August 2017. We have confirmed that the matter remains under investigation and that neither the accuser nor any representative of the accuser has communicated with us regarding the allegation.” Watson had previously denied the allegations. He told reporters in January that he did not know anything about the accusations. He added: “I’m just going to continue to do what I’ve always done. Just keep working hard, stay humble, and try to get better each day.” On Tuesday, Watson apologized for his actions. He wrote on Twitter: “I am deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to my family, friends and teammates. I apologize to the entire organization for letting them down and especially to the victim involved.” Watson went on to say that he would take full responsibility for his mistakes. He concluded his apology tweet by saying: “I want to thank God, my family, my coaches, my teammates, my fans and everyone else who has supported me along the way.”
