The Los Angeles Lakers finalized their first trade of the NBA offseason last week, acquiring Patrick Beverley from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson. It was a trade that will help the Lakers, but they are far from done.
Los Angeles still has a long way to go before they can be considered a team that will challenge in the Western Conference, let alone compete for a playoff spot. There is only so much that can be expected from their star duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
While those two can carry the team, they will need some better luck when it comes to injuries so they stay on the field. Also, the pieces around them still need to fit a little better than the pieces that Rob Pelinka acquired last season.
The Lakers are looking for another trade or two to make this offseason. Another trade package can now be built with their remaining draft capital should the opportunity arise.
Could another trade with Utah be on the horizon? One NBA executive spoke to NBA Analysis Network on the possibility of another trade between the franchises going down. The Lakers could be the third team in a Donovan Mitchell blockbuster to help facilitate things.
“Patrick Beverley was a good addition, but they could use more of a scoring threat to run the point like Mike Conley. It would help to add a wing that can shoot like Bogdanovic, too. For what the Jazz gave up Beverley for, it doesn’t seem like it would be as expensive to add a few key players from them compared to what the Pacers want for Myles Turner and Buddy Hield. … If Donovan Mitchell is moved soon, a trade like this becomes a great option for both sides.”
The Indiana Pacers are reportedly looking for the Lakers’ first-round picks in 2027 and 2029 to seriously consider making a deal to part with Buddy Hield and Myles Turner in a Russell Westbrook trade.
Given the fact that they didn’t have to surrender any draft capital to acquire Beverley from the Jazz, which was a big win, it could mean other veterans could be cheaper than originally thought, as the executive pointed out.
Danny Ainge is reportedly motivated to trade Donovan Mitchell before training camp gets underway and the Lakers’ involvement could speed that process up.
