The Phoenix Suns hope to reach new heights and territories within the next few seasons. Winning the NBA Finals would be a tremendous accomplishment, but what about winning the league's first ever in-season tournament?
The midseason tournament has slowly morphed into what feels like an inevitable reality, drawing influence from overseas soccer and creating what they hope will be a new dynamic moving forward for professional basketball.
On Friday, The Athletic's Shams Charania tweeted out a few more details on what to expect from the tournament, which could be instilled as soon as next season.
There's still a few questions to be had surrounding this concept: How will the league enforce teams to take this serious? Will there be any end of season incentive?
This has already drawn heavy criticism from fans and some players who have opted to be vocal about the matter.
To the NBA's credit, not many thought the play-in tournament at the end of the season would work. Now it's a coveted part of the final series of regular season games.
Could the in-season tournament yield similar results? The league wants to find out, and it appears as if its only a matter of time before we as basketball consumers do too.
